Stara Baška

In June 2020 when Covid-19 situation somewhat stabilised we were able to leave the country. We decided on a shorter trip to our neighbouring Croatia. We both visited their seaside as children but haven’t been there in a long time.

Three hours of driving and we arrived on the island Krk, the closest one to Slovenia. Our dog joined us this time.

Our hotel was located in the south of the island. Little town called Stara Baška is relaxing, calm and just what we needed. There’s a limited selection of restaurants which we would get tired of had we stayed longer but it was fine for now. It would probably be best to get an apartment instead of a hotel room with no kitchen.

Anyway, we explored the nearby beaches and rocky hills. And it really wasn’t crowded so we loved it.

Krk Town

We wandered outside of our nest in Stara Baška, drove through Punat and visited Krk town, supposedly one of the oldest towns in the Adriatic Sea. It’s been inhabited since ancient times. Roman ruins can still be seen today in some parts of the town. The centre was quite crowded so we quickly escaped to more secluded narrow streets.

The beaches around Stara Baška are quite stunning, some accessible and some not so much. We visited Zaglav Beach and Oprna Bay. On the east side of Stara Baška we went as far as Zala and Surbova Beach.

One morning I decided to hike up the prominent peak above Stara Baška. I can’t find the name but it was a fun hike with some rewarding views. I could see towards Galun, Prvić, Sveti Grgur and Rab islands.

Fujifilm Slovenija hooked me up with a change of gear. I got a nice deal for a zoom all-rounder XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR. I now seldom use any other lens.

Vrbnik

Vrbnik was a nice surprise. The village on the east side of Krk is perched on a limestone outcropping 50m above the sea and is known for its indigenous variety of white wine called Žlahtina. We tried the wine with a plate of local ham and cheese with a view towards mainland Croatia.

We also drove to Baška, a very packed and touristy town in the south-east. Had a lovely seafood dinner with some friends and headed back to our cozy town.

Fulfinum Mirine

Our short vacation was ending but not before two more stops. We checked out Fulfinum Mirine, ruins of an old Roman town and Omišalj, another coastal town with lovely atmosphere. We then headed north towards the bridge and home. I think the borders closed down again a day after we crossed, so we were lucky enough to have caught a window for this summer trip.
